Cambs HA entered a team into the England Hockey Over 60s Cup for the first time this year. Comprising players from clubs across the County this was a great opportunity to renew old friendships and rivalries.
The first round welcomed Lindum (Lincolnshire) to Wilberforce Road. They were holders of the Plate (for first round losers) and a tough game was expected. In the end Cambs ran out comfortable winners 3-1 with two goals from Howard Atkins (Wisbech HC) and one from Robin White (Cambridge Nomads).
The second round was against local rivals Suffolk which Cambs won 3-0 with more goals from White (2) and Atkins.
The next round was the quarter-finals against holders Warwickshire & Worcestershire packed full of internationals (although we did have four of our own). Despite some solid defence and great goalkeeping from Kevin Shippey (Wisbech) we lost 2-1 with our consolation goal courtesy of NIgel Gadsby (Cambridge City).
All the games were played to a high standard in a competitive but fair environment and as much time was spent in the bar afterwards as on the pitch. Age really is no barrier when it comes to hockey.
